Desideravo da molto parlarvi di Isabella Maria Mayson, finalmente ho trovato il tempo da dedicare a questo articolo di presentazione. Molti di voi avranno già sentito parlare del libro di economia domestica di Mrs Beeton, un volume antico che risale al 1861 pubblicato da S. O. Beeton Publishing, ma a mio avviso ricco di consigli sempre validi anche nei tempi in cui viviamo. Un “Invitare con Stile” di epoca vittoriana, un testo, una guida che dona suggerimenti, indicazioni, insegnamenti sulla vita domestica dalla cucina al “lifestyle”.
(12 marzo 1836 – gennaio 1865), nota come la signora Beeton, è la food writer più famosa della storia brittanica vittoriana, autrice del libro: Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management, una guida completa sulla gestione e organizzazione familiare. Isabella studiò in Germania dove diventò un’ ottima pianista e nel 1856 sposò a Londra il suo editore Samuel Orchard Beeton, amico d’infanzia.
Madame Beeton iniziò a scrivere articoli sul cibo e sulla gestione della casa a soli 21 anni grazie all’incoraggiamento del consorte, arrivando a pubblicare vari articoli per la casa editrice del marito.
Nel 1859-1861, scrisse un supplemento mensile della rivista The Englishwoman’s Domestic Magazine che in breve tempo diventò un “bestseller”, un unico ed utile volume di 1112 pagine, circa 900 sono dedicate a ricette tipiche dell’epoca con illustrazioni a colori (il primo libro ad avere disegni di piatti ad acquerello) : The Book of Household Management Comprising information for the Mistress, Housekeeper, Cook, Kitchen-Maid, Butler, Footman, Coachman, Valet, Upper and Under House-Maids, Lady’s-Maid, Maid-of-all-Work, Laundry-Maid, Nurse and Nurse-Maid, Monthly Wet and Sick Nurses, etc. etc. also Sanitary, Medical, & Legal Memoranda: with a History of the Origin, Properties, and Uses of all Things Connected with Home Life and Comfort.
Dopo aver dato alla luce il suo quarto figlio nel gennaio 1865 Isabella contrasse la febbre puerperale e morì una settimana dopo, all’età di 28 anni.
“Mrs Beeton” è ancora oggi un’ icona in Gran Bretagna e in tutto il mondo.
